Moray Council awarded £2,200 in grants to local community groups promoting positive change through sport and physical activity to bring about positive individual and community change.
The eight successful applicants and their initiatives include Walking Netball, Walking Football, Get on a Bike, Elgin Sports Community Trust, Buckie Ladies Football Development, Burghead Coastal Rowing Club, Hopeman Golf Club, and Karate Academy Scotland.
These projects meet the grant criteria such as supporting mental health, addressing trauma, reducing crime, boosting self-confidence, aiding those with physical disabilities, and assisting families in poverty.
Diane Maciver, Chair of the Get on a Bike initiative, which works to support mental health through cycling said: “Elgin’s newest mental and physical health cycling group, Get On A Bike, is delighted to have received this grant. The group has been formed to cater specifically for those recovering from illness or those trying to improve health quality without resorting to medication. With a fleet of hybrid bikes and based in the town’s Cooper Park, trained ride leaders are available to help build new skills and confidence.
Cycling benefits mental and physical health, but the real magic occurs during coffee breaks – where conversations flow and friendships blossom. When establishing our group, funding for coffee stops was crucial. This grant will enable us to provide coffee to our participants, giving each short ride a meaningful purpose.
